Other Things To Consider Before Getting a Goldendoodle

Picking the correct generation of puppy for your family also matters.

  • A F1 Goldendoodle is 50% Poodle, and 50% Golden Retriever

  • A F1B Goldendoodle is 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever – and is more reliable hypoallergenic and low shedding

  • F2 Goldendoodles are made by breeding two Goldendoodles with each other. The pups are known as a multigeneration Goldendoodle.

Many owners find that F1B Goldendoodles are the perfect point of beautiful, healthy, energetic, low shedding Goldendoodles.

Other owners find that their breeder has an excellent genetic diversity program and their multigeneration F1 Goldendoodles are brilliant. You need to read social media and website reviews of breeders if you are purchasing from one.

What Generation is my Rescue Goldendoodle?

If you are adopting a Goldendoodle, it is difficult to figure out which generation your dog is without genetic testing. You can make an educated guess based on the coat type

There are SO many different types of Poodle Mix crossbreeds – and many look similar to Goldendoodles.

The more Poodle present, the more hypoallergenic and less shedding present. If your adopted or result Goldendoodle sheds ALOT – it likely has a higher percentage of Golden Retriever. It is unlikely to be a F1B or F2 generation Goldendoodle (Wikipedia)

Also look at the structure of the face, coat and temparament. Is there a chance that other breeds are mixed with your crossbreed? Particularly if the Goldendoodle you hav rescued is very small. Sometimes people choose to breed Goldendoodle with some American Cocker Spaniel to create very small or Toy Goldendoodles.

Another complicating factor is that sometimes breeders introduce other breeds deliberately in order to try and give the ideal temperament or avoid health issues. An example from another breed is the Australian Bernedoodle Vs the Bernedoodle, which are actually very different breeds.

If the following list is your family – then a Gldendoodle might be ideal for you!

  • Active lifestyle

  • A moderate to large home or yard for larger Goldendoodles (makes easier but apartment Goldendoodles do exist)

  • Time to spend with your Goldendoodle puppy to train and avoid puppy separation anxiety

  • Enjoy non-shedding- but are ok with regular grooming costs and time

  • Want an easily trained dog (including toilet training)
